Causes of borderline personality disorder

It’s not clear what causes borderline personality disorder (BPD). There are several different factors which can lead to developing BPD including:

  • Traumatic childhood events such as neglect, abuse, or being abandoned
  • Genetics – There’s some research which suggests BPD could be passed through genes. You’re more likely to receive this diagnosis if a close family member also has it. However, there’s no clear evidence that there is a gene that causes BPD
